Hi all,
I am thinking of upgrading from a tiny tank to a 40 or 60 gallon one, my main concern is that this will be really noisy. Even my small tank filter gives off an annoying humming noise.
Are your tanks noisy?
CHeers!

Air pumps & hob filters are the main cause of noise. If it's a larger tank set it up with a canister filter. Eheims are a bit costly, but nearly silent.

I have an Eheim Pro II 2028 on my tank which is completely silent. The only part of my setup that is noisy is the mechanical timer on the lights :D

I have a 55g tank and I have a fluval filter, a rena air pump just to agitate the surface and I have to keep double checking to see if they are still working because they are so quiet.

Most modern external canisters are pretty quiet. Eheims, (all I use now), are silent, unless you get the wet and dry models which I find noisy.

I have two Juwel tanks and they are virtually silent.
Yep, as long as you position the powerhead correctly!

Has taken me four months to iron out the rumble from my compact H filter.

Still, sounds ok now.....

I'll chime in to agree with what was said already. HOB filters cause splashing, and that's most of your noise right there. I have a Fluval 204 on a small tank, and it is absolutely silent. Sometimes I even worry about whether or not it's running until I see the Xenia swaying in the current :)
