I'm going to be setting up a 40Ltr shrimp tank today, and I'm just wondering what the best substrate is to use?

Also, if it's just a shrimp tank... will it still need to be heavily planted? As they shouldn't have anything to hide from... apart from them selfs

Cheers

I have gravel in my tank (black gravel as it brings their colour out better). Personally I would say it doesn't need to be heavily planted; planted yes but not heavily planted. I had a shrimp only tank and I introduced 3 guppies to it and I've not seen any less of the shrimp which I am really pleased about (my guppies are smaller than "regular" guppies" - the RCS are bigger than the guppies so they don't mind - they in fact seem to like the fish as they really like eating their food.
