I am wanting to switch from gravel to sand but I realized that if I wanted to add plants I'll probably need a substrate made for plants. Would sand alone be okay or would I need a substrate made for planted tanks?

you could do a DIY substrate. Clay and topsoil. just make sure it all organic

If you wanted to use just sand, that would be fine and you won't have any problems growing plants with it.
A lot of people use specially made plant substrates though with good results.

I'm doing this :) I'll be putting a detailed journal up when I get chance to start switching over next week some time so keep an eye out :)

Just plain old sand is fine for your plants if that's what you like :)
