best snails for puffers

I've read Malasyian trumpet snails shells are too hard for puffers beaks and sometimes they damage their beaks trying to crack the shells. I don't know personally wether this is true or not.
other than that i'd say set up a little 5 or 10 gallon and breed your own snails.. pond snails, ramshorn, whatever... that way you can feed them a balanced diet and your puffers will be getting nutrition out of them.

Mystery snails when small. Just crush them against the side of the tank if need be. They should stick...

Fish store.

Lps local pet store.

There should be a pinned article on abbreviations in the beginner section. :D

and most fish shops will give you snails for free to start up your own breeding tank. The number of snails usually realates to the amount of food availible so i drop any cockle that my puffer doesnt finish, or a large pinch of flakes in my snail tank, and after a few weeks you will start to see little jelly like blobs stuck to the side of the tank, then hundreds of teeny tiny snails, keep going for your very own snail supply!

I'd like to breed snails for my loaches and puffer to eat. Do they need a filter / heater / anything special? I assume a tight-fitting cover will stop them escaping but will also reduce the air supply.

i am breeding snails in a small plastic tank.

i tried them without a heater to star with but they wouldnt breed, once i added a spare heater the babies started arriving. I also have a small air pump powered filter in there to keep the water circulating and stop the water fromn going stagnant and stinky. i put in any uneaten leftovers from my other tanks, flakes, old plant leaves that come off, and plants cuttings. the more food, the more snails....

<----good snail

I've got some of these in my tank. Came in with a plant and they're breeding... but my puffers don't seem interested... is there any way to encourage them to eat them?

maybe pick some of the snails out, keep them in water, then drop them in at feeding time. the puffers will see you dropping them into the tank at dinner time and go after them as they fall assuming they are food, once they try one they should get the idea.

worth a try maybe?
