What is the best paint to use for an aquarium background?

I hear black is the best colour...

Im located in australia, if that makes any difference, but we should have most paints you do in other countries.

Thanks

black is best, but i like blue also.

use spraypaint.

it depends, but use a good quality paint.

dull or bright colored black. it depends what u like.

I have tanks with both colours, the black shows up the plants better and also hightlights brightly coloured fish, but isn't so hot with darker coloured fish, they do look good against a blue background.

I used normal emulsion paint, easy to put on either with a mini roller or a paintbrush, it's alos easy to scrape off if you decide you want a change.

I would strongly advise avoiding the use of oil-based paint and opting for water-based. In 33 years as a tank manufacturer, I have on several occasions come across tanks where the silicone seam at the rear of the tank has started to lift for no apparent reason. The only thing these tanks had in common was the fact that the rear glass on all of them had been painted with oil-based paint. I subsequently built a tank as an experiment and an hour or so later painted the back with gloss paint. The following morning it was possible to peel off the silicone along the back seam, much like opening a banana. I then spent several days removing similar paint from all of the tanks in my fishroom, and replacing it with emulsion paint.

Amen, plain old flat latex paint is the way to go IMO. I painted mine a flat black. Latex is easier to get off than spraypaint if you do want a change or want to sell teh tank ever

I;d avoid spray paint, its near imposible to keep from getting atleat some inside the tank, even if you saran wrap the top. I used tempra paint whne I painted a fish tank, it worked quite well.

Black emulsion paint (2 -3 coats) is excellent for your purpose. Lighter colours (backgrounds and substrates) tend to wash out the colours of many freshwater tropical fish species.
