I know you probably get what you pay for, but I am looking for something on the cheaper side. Does anyone have experience with these and which one of these two would be better?

red sea skimmers are useless, dont know about the other

The coralife models skim better but are a little tempermental and have a tendancy to overflow. Sounds like you're in the US which means I'd look for an AquaC Remora if you want a hang on. Consider buying used to lessen the cost...
