2 days ago, I noticed that my roommate's puffer had 2 little white spots on his head. Didn't look like ich, but I put in a tsp of melafix and raised the water temp to 84 degrees. Now the white spots have doubled in size and look fluffy like cotton. He's really unhappy and sits at the bottom of the tank and won't eat. Not bloodworms, not brine shrimp, nothing interests him (I used a syringe to put the food in front of him). All I have on hand is melafix, I've been treating the tank, but it's not helping. I'm warming up my FICU (Fishie Intensive Care Unit) tank and am going to move him there for treatment since he has an ADF and I know amphibians are sensitive to medication. The tank had a HUGE ammonia spike 2 days ago (when I noticed the spots), which I rectified with a 50% water change and some zeolite pillows.

I'm thinking it's a fungus, and if so, what's the best treatment? Also when I was doing the emergency water change, I had the puffer and the ADF in the same bowl, and the puffer tried to take a bite out of the ADF . Will this be a problem in the future, or was it just the close proximity of my 1 gal hospital tank?

Please help me ASAP, I'm going to the LFS 1st thing tomorrow morning, but I don't want to rely solely on their advice.

*if he doesn't take better care of his fishies, I'm gonna confiscate them*

Not sure on treating puffers, but u might try Pimafix in conjunction w/ the Melafix.
Maracyn & Maracyn II might be another option.

For 'body fungus', you'll not want to raise the temp, tho.

Well, I went to the LFS and was told it's a viral infection, and to use aquarium salt. But when I got home, it was too late, he'd already swum under the rainbow bridge. :-( :-( .

My roommate went and got another puffer. This one looks like a lepoard puffer. I told him that if it gets sick and I have to take care of it, I'm taking back my tank with all the fishies in it. (not to be mean, but think of the poor fishies..... )

The good news is that the tank appears to be on the downswing of the cycle.

Nitrite .1ppm
Ammonia .05

aw, that's too bad. :(

Finishing the cycle might've been better before adding a new fish, but I do wish you/him luck. :)
