Just bought a used 55 gallon tank and stand and got a great deal. The person included an (Eheim?) cannister filter. The filter had a broken part on the handle that can be replaced once I get around to ordering the part. I don't know anything about cannister filters (how use them, how well they work, etc.) and I have been unable to find an instruction booklet on the internet.

Since i'm not familiar with these cannisters should I...

1. Repair the cannister filter and proceed to figure out how to use it or

2. Buy a new power filter (I know how to use those!) and sell the cannister?

Which filter is best in your opinion? If I were to buy a new power filter, what brand would you recommend?

The tank is freshwater, with gravel and all plastic plants.

TIA! :D
