I find darker substrates bring out the colour better.

This might be better moved to the general forum as its not really hybrid specific and you will get more answers.

I would think darker colour of gravel would bring out the contrast from your fish, eg black. I've seen Flowerhorns in white gravel and they look ......

For saltwater, white sand. Black sand doesn't look too good in salt tanks.

Fh's just like all my tanks.. red and yellow gravel.. but not a lot, i put almost bare bottoms.. colorful backgrounds helps too.
