I have never really used a powerhead before, even when i had my cichlid tank. I now have a 10 gallon aquarium and i was thinking if adding a powerhead would do anything. It is stocked with 3 platies and 1 platy fry. It also has a total of 7 cories. My main question is what is their purpose and are they beneficial?

I'm not to sure about power heads from use, but everything I have seen they are used to create water movement in the tank.
They are used heavily in marine tanks to simulate currents and movement that occurs naturally in the ocean.
I guess you could use one in a freshwater tank to help simulate a river current for the correct species of fish.
In a 10gallon tank I would guess you are getting plenty of water movement from your filter, but I could be wrong. But I would think a powerhead would make the inside of a 10gl like a blender.
Don't think your fry would like it much...getting sucked in and spit out all day long...

A more experienced member might be able to give you more solid advice, but IMHO I don't think you need a powerhead for a 10gal tank.

Agree with steve in a 10 gal your filter should be doing most of the work, unless there is spot were poo is building up you can use a nano power head

I use one in my tank to increase flow, it also moves poo from the front of my tank to the filter to keep it nice and tidy! :good: In a 10g tank it may be a bit powerful, as a filter will move allot of water already.

Agree with all the above that in a 10g it would be too much. Your filter should be providing all you need. I have a powerhead in my 29g tall tank now to move the waste from the nether regions to where the filter can get at it. But there are no fry, just my tiger barbs and a BN and they all like the extra action.

to be honest mate, if you used any sort of other powerhead in there you may well just use it as a second washing machine :)

Yeah my filter is doing a good job so i guess adding one would be a terrible idea and it wouldn't help.

I wasn't really hoping, i was just wondering if this could make my aquarium better and fish happier since i want to keep my fish as happy and healthy as possible, i have recently been seeing a lot of them and decided to investigate if they could really help my fish in any way but i guess that i don't really need one :)
