So we have plenty to read up on on how to make the bottle which mixture etc ... but what happens when you've got that done? I'm having difficulty finding out how to get it from the bottle into the tank. Do I just use an airline and airstone? And whats a bell jar?

All input welcome!

As far as I know.... You drill a hole in the bottle lid, put an airline in which you can attatch to an airstone, or better, cut the top off another drinks bottle (2-3 inches from the top), drill a hole in the lid and put your airline through. Then drill a couple of holes in the bottle so you can put suckers on and attatch it to the tank.

Generating CO2 is not difficult, getting it to dissolve in water, much more so. Simply bubbling the CO2 from your DIY through the tank is close to useless. The CO2 needs to be in contact with the water for a good while to dissolve. A bell jar is one way of doing this.

If you cut the bottom off a plastic bottle or similar, arrange it upright in your tank, and then feed the CO2 into the bottle, it will be trapped and form a bubble, (which will gradually expand in size as the CO2 is produced. The important thing is though, that the there is CO2 in contact with the aquarium water all the time.

When using a bell jar, it is useful to try to arrange for some flow of water under the bottle to distribute the dissolved CO2 rather then creating a small locally CO2 rich area.

Thats the information I was looking for :) Thanks a lot both of you
