Well, you need to give us more information. For example.. tank size, real or fake plants, substrate, filtration, lighting, etc. Do you want nice fish or territorial? Answer these and then maybe you can get some ideas! Good luck with your new tank!

Answer the questions Mike and Diana suggested and we can help you. Do you want a community tank or not? Do you prefer fish from certain regions of the world? e.g Amazon, Asia etc. :)

Well tetras and platties are a good hardy fish to keep but a word of advice do some research before you do anything i found out the hard way (£100 of live stock sufferd for that)

Another thing I'd also consider is what your local water/tank parameters are like, ie pH,hard soft, hardness....

....imho, not just for beginners, it is much easier for you(and the fish) to choose species that prefer your water conditions than try and adjust the water to suit that of the fish - it will also greatly narrow your wish list....

Do you have readings for your local water???

:)

I would try a school of zebra danios (5 or 6 of em).. they are very active and also very cheap. But they aren't very colorful (dark blue and silver or gold stripes)

If you want something a bit more colorful you could try 2 male & 3 female platies. HTH :)
