Hello!

I am new to fish keeping after recently recieiving a gift of a 28l tank. I am EXTREMELY excited but want to do right by the fish and am looking for recommendations of what kind of fish could be kept comfortably and happy in a tank this size its probably about 60-70cm long and 20 cm deep. I would love one of those little cat fish that help clean the tank ( I just think they are so cute and funny) but not sure if this is enough room for them etc.

any suggestions and advice are welcome !
Thank you :)

I think this guide could be useful to getting the tank started!

What's your water like?
gh kh ph (it is on your water supplier's data chart)
This will determine the types of fish you can keep

28 liters is too small to keep normal cories( the funny looking catfish), since they need at least 6 in a group
however, there are smaller types of cories (pygmy cory and dwarf salt+pepper)

I'm not sure if that is still too small though, i have never kept those

This tank is obviously not 28 litres. 60 -70 cm is a bit over 2 foot long!! If you tell us the height of the tank and exactly how long the tank is (you said 60 -70, 70 would be a lot bigger than 60) we can tell you the exact litres or you can calculate it at our tank calculator (we have one in the forum).

Well, for a tank that size, I would suggest stocking it up with plants, leaving it two weeks, checking the water, then you could get some fish.

But before you do that, educate yourself on fishes needs. Like water changes, filters, heaters, parameters, and cycling the tank.
Plants are good as the help to stabilize the water. You would need to buy some substrate, and if you were keeping cories, you would need some fine, smooth subtrate like sand. In terms of plat suggestions, I would say something like Anubis Bartari var. nana, as it will not outgrow the tank, and then maybe some Dwarf Hygrophila. Basically you wnat to avoind any fine leaved or red plants to start with, as they are very hard to keep.

For the fish (when you have cycled the tank) dwarf corydoras would be a good choice, but first you would need some hardier fish. For a much bigger tank, I would suggest danios, but for a 28l I would go for something like Galaxy Rasboras (AKA Celestial Pearl Danio) as they are smaller. I would go for 6 of them, as they are a shoaling species, but to many and you would not be able to keep any more fish.
Once you have had them for a couple of weeks, you could introduce some dwarf corydoras in. I would suggest 3-5.
Then you could always get some shrimp! There isn't much limit on how many you could keep, as they are small and do not produce much waste.

You would need to do 20% water changes every week, to keep the water clean, and then refill it with dechlorinated tap water. Chlorine is poisonous to fish.

You would also DEFINITELY need a fitler and a heater, as well as LED lights. Make sure these are the right size for the tank.

I hope this is helpful to you, but if anyone more experienced notices anything wround with what I have said, then please correct me.

Have fun with your fishies!
