What do you guys (and ladies :) ) use for ur bedding for plants?
I've always used a layer of sand and gravel. But the plants never really did well. They didnt die but didnt get better either.

So let me know. Is there some specific sand i am supposed to use?

thanks alot.

Sand or Gravel is ussually inert, meaning it does nothing and provides plant roots with no nutrients. There are a lot of nutrient rich substrates specifically made for planted aquariums, and thats what you really need. Some people even use garden soil, which is something Im going to try on my next planted tank. On my newest tank Im using Eco Complete but theres quite a choice of substrates and Im sure most do the job well. If you already have your plants in an inert substate then you could add Root tablets which you insert at the base of the plants. Have a look at the substrate and substrate tabs sections of aquaessentials.co.uk and you'll have an idea of what there is on offer.

Hope that helped, Im sure someone else will be able to tell you a bit more if need be.
