My local Beach has smooth round rocks and i was wondering if these are ok to put in my tank? Would they be Socked through with salt?

Also What about rocks from a fw river?

Kev :/

Hi

A rock from the sea it contain lime, that will rise ur PH.

If you have a Salt Water tank, will be ok.

But if you have a Fresh Water tank, this's a problem.

A rock from river, i really don't know, but you have to test it if it contain lime or not before put it.

To test the rock from the lime, u have to put some vinegar...

If FIZZES it contain lime...

That's it..

Generally, rocks/stones that do not fizz when vinegar is put on them, have no sharp edges, and are not VERY heavy, (by this I mean a rock that seems heavier then it should be for it's size), are okay for use in tanks if they are well cleaned.

Rocks which fizz contain calcareous minerals which will harden your water and raise it's pH, (although this is a good thing in a rift valley tank).

Sharp objects, well that is obvious.

Overly heavy materials probably contain ore minerals which can leach metals into the tank. Now some of these are harmless, but unless you know exactly what it is, it is best to avoid them.

I have put some rocks i found near the sea in my new tank. These are not sharp, but i though boiling them for a bit might get rid of any bacteria etc that might be harmful. Do i need to get these out asap?

hey! about your rock problem. i would boil them in bleach and water to get rid of the saltiness then add them to the freshwater tank. 15% bleach works good. =)

Make sure you rinse and clean thoroughly anything you bleach before it goes into your tank.

and whatever you are using to contain the water to boil it in, such as a pot, if you are going to sue it to cook food for human consumption, make sure to clean it really well... bleach can cause stomach ulcers.
