Ok to cut a long story short, we are in the process of having a new bathroom installed. The old bath in now in the garden, with bit of rubble in it and yesterday while walking past it I had an nice image of it with a few plant and a couple of Goldfish in it. My question is would I get away with putting in under one of the trees in the garden, filling in up and putting a few lily’s (or something like that) and some Goldfish in. The bath is made of tin.

I know off some one years ago who used a corner cast iron bath as a pond. I don't know if the enamel would be safe for the fish, maybe some-one else can comment. It turned out that this bath had been liberated from a well known bathroom suppliers, and was only spotted because of the colour. (penthouse red)

what would you do with the fish in winter? it would freeze solid being above ground and below ground wouldnt fair any better.

Id say you could have two small goldies and the plants but you would need to house the fish somewhere over winter and next spring maybe add a filter

Would add a pump to it. So hopefully wouldnt freeze over.

It should be fine if you are extra careful about not letting it freeze over.

I know my dad talked about his old goldfish he kept in a bathtub in the garden fo a few years...until a big gull ate it.

I would only try it if a) I could put it in full light and plant it heavily with nice marginals (do wonders for the water), b) had it close to a power source so I could put a pump in it for water movement and put a 300W heater in running 24/7 during the winder to stop it freezing, c) put a mesh cover over it to stop birds getting to it.

Wrapping the outside with bubble wrap or anything else that would unsulate it during the winder would help too.

I may just build a smallish pond then about 3ft long x 1.5ft deep x 3ft wide.
