Base Rock Into Live Rock?

I use both Base Rock and Reef bones underneath my Live Rock in my stack

See the white stuff at the bottom of my stack? ^ thats base rock + reef bones, eventually it will go purple and do the same thing as the Live Rock but it takes a long time,Reef Bones basically is dead Live Rock,Ocean/Base Rock is a lot heavier but similar...not as effective tho,but it does save money on LR.

Don't try and do a tank with all Base Rock,it wont work as I found out a few months back, just use it as a nice 'base' to your stack and eventually it will colour up...its handy for that to as its heavier and makes for a more sturdy base.

If you do see Reef Bones, pick them up they are great, mine looks identical to my live rock now,you wouldnt be able to tell the difference..and thats just in a few months.

It will depend on the rock and how porous it is. If it is similar to Live rock then it can become live rock. If it is too porous or not porous enough then you won't get the anoxic zones form in the rock to aid in denitrification. It will steal deal with converting ammonia through nitrite to nitrate however.

Basicly seeds off the live rock! can take up to 6-12months to start to seed but it will never be as good as live rock! i wouldnt botherd because its a wast of water!

For a 55G tank(4ft in length), how much base, reef and live rock would you recommend?

Depends how tall your tank is,my tank is 3 foot 3" and 20" high and i have 25kg in that stack 5kg is base rock,5kg is reef bones and 15kg is live rock.

my stack is incomplete tho,im gonna add another 5kg of LR so 30kg to complete a 3ft 3" long 20" high stack.

Make sure you have double LR to base rock tho.
