Schooling is a defensive strategy adopted by fish when they feel threatened. In a 20, even lightly stocked, you will not see true schooling. Maybe a few fish will hang out together, but not the tight schooling of the minds eye.

When threatened, fish of the same species school up, if really desperate, they will school up with other species, but if that is the case, then you've got serious problems anyway. Fish that stressed will not live long.

Not all barbs are schooling species. Cherry Barbs for example, are best kept as a pair, or trio, 1 male 2 females. Two males together in a small tank may well fight.

Why not buy a small group of Dwarf Loaches botia sidthimunki... they only reach approx 5.5cm... They are lively, peacful, schooling fish, it is also an avid swimmer ( active by day )... :good:

My Tiger Barbs (15 total) and Serpaes (7 total) all school together during partial water changes. Other than that, they never school together and wander around on their own.
