Barbecue Lava Rock Safe For Aquarium?

I'm looking to add some Lava Rock to my tank, is the stuff you buy for barbecues the same thing?

Obviously it would be thoroughly washed before hand

Has anyone used it without side effects?

yes ive used it to great effect with a diy back ground and spent hours glueing the stuff to the back of a 4 foot tank but the only trouble was it looks a bit odd in a fresh water set up and more like a marine tank.
i ended up changing the tank to african cichlids as a sort of false marine tank it looked fantastic.

yeh thats the stuff

It is safe!! I have used it. Just junk gets under it. I just gave it a quick rinse. Adds a little iron to the water column.
