The cleaning power of red cherry shrimp

So having experimented with putting algae covered bogwood into my shrimp tank (major success), I thought I'd share some pictures of how it went. I couldn't get pictures of how the bogwood looked initially as the camera batteries were charging, but hopefully you will get the idea. Never again will I spend hours scrubbing over a sink, trying but never getting into every nook and cranny. The bogwood is from my 90 gallon oscar tank, the shrimp seem to like it by the way they swarm on it. The guppies also liked it (still havn't been able to return them :S)

The bogwood went into the tank yesterday evening, and the 'finished' photos were taken this morning.

This was no small piece of bogwood, the tanks a juwel rio 180 (40" long) so I would estimate the length of the bogwood to be 16"-20" and its got quite a width to it as well (my oscar can just about get under it). So you can see by this photo the size of the bogwood the shrimp cleaned.

This morning, and what a difference

I've now put another piece of bogwood in from the oscar tank (will keep cycling until they are all clean). It sure beats scrubbing away over a sink for ages and still missing bits, this way you can go to bed and when you wake up you have some nice shiny bogwood.

Hope you enjoy the photos :)

Wow, they are good at cleaning! Nice shrimp tank too.

Of course, in any tank with algae eaters, it's only a matter of time before a less tasty species of algae takes hold  .

I was surprised at how much the guppies liked it also. Can't wait until they are gone though, hopefully even more baby shrimp will survive then.

ive just had my first babies, they look like freshly hatched sea monkeys just jumping around in the substrate

Sounds good, I have yet to see any baby shrimp - I must have some though due to the increase in population and constantly berried/saddled females.

Excellent pics, soft green algae has no chance with shrimp about. My shrimp tank grows a lot of algae but the shrimp graze is so well that its never visible.
Baby shrimp are good at hiding they become mostly nocturnal when there are fish about.
