Ran across bamboo the other day. Did a bit of reading and sure enough there are different thoughts as to best take care of this plant in your aquarium.

Any input here?

Probably lucky bamboo. Not a difficult plant to grow in my experience. Bottom half in the aquarium with the roots, top half (or I guess more than half) above water with the leaves. Great to take in some of the ammonia and fish waste and clean your water.

I've heard it will do well for a while and then begin to decompose.
Only if the cut is below water. I kept lucky bamboo in a 55g tank for years. As long as you keep the crown above the water level, it won't rot and will pretty much last forever.

What variety of bamboo, there are hundreds :)

If it's lucky bamboo, then it is fine to have in water as long as the leaves are dry and the roots are wet. But most other types of bamboo don't do well with wet feet (wet roots).
