i was at the pet store to see if any german blue rams came in yet and i notice the bamboo shrimp. i found a website that said the larve shrimp need saltwater which made me think maybe the shrimp are brackish water species i would like to get a pair if anyone has any info like how to sex them breed them and what type of water they like i would appreciate it thanks for any info or stories about your shrimp

pull back a chair and here we go....

they are a freshwater species, and will happily live in our water, but to breed they need salt in the water for the young. So goodbye to breeding them, but hello to watching these fascinating little fellas. I have 4 in a tank with endlers gups and rasboras.all get on well and healthy.Anything you want to know, just ask....

have you had your shrimp for awhile every thing i read on them people wernt very succesfull with them and they died not long after they bought them

I own a bamboo shrimp. I did some reading up on them and apparently any bamboo shrimp you buy at an LFS will be wild caught as they've not ever been successfully bred in captivity.

As for them dying shortly after getting them, they are filter feeders, meaning that they live off bits and micro-organisms they find in the water and you can't really feed them food direct (well, you can, but it's complicated). I imagine that most of those that died died of starvation.

About a year now.. like he said above, they are filter feeders,so my theory is that people keep them on their own,if you have a few fish in there, there's a cycle of algae, nutrients etc..... J keep tiny fish in with mine, and feed them fry food, micro pellets and my own crushed mix....seems to work.
