Hello all, just returned home to my tank and found my "mid-sized" Bamboo shrimp dead. I've had him for a month now in my brand new tank. The tank is community and has two tetras, two mollys, and a pleco.

I've read that shrimp can die from molting complications...Here are my observations.
  • The shrimp was off colored, almost a pinkish color
  • This Pinkish molt seemed to be not very attached to the shrimp almost as if it were coming apart
  • It was about 2-3 weeks since last molt

definitely a bummer but I'd like to know how to prevent this when I do get a new shrimp, and also if my other fish may be in danger. Any help or advice would be great.

Thank you

Another thing to consider apart from molting complications is starvation. As these shrimp are filter feeders it can sometimes be difficult for them to get much food in a community tank unless they are target fed. As the shrimp only lasted a month I would seriously consider this as a possible cause of death.

When shrimps die, they generally turn pink/white. It's due to some form of chemical change in the body.

How big is your Plec and have you tested the water? I had a Plec completely shell a Red Clawed Crab and an Armoured Shrimp once.
