If a ballast is quoted at running 2 x 55W T5 tubes. Would this be ok to use with 2 x 54W T5 tubes?

I'm not sure if the 1W makes any difference.

And I am planning on wiring 4 double sockets together and then putting a plug on the end to make an 8 socket extension. Should the sockets be wired in series or ring, or doesn't this matter?

The difference should be fine.

Are you talking about making an extension lead with 4 double sockets on it? Wire it in series.

If you are talking about adding 4 double sockets to your home and adding them to the ring mains, then if you are not a qualified electrician, it will be illeagal for you to do that now. (Sorry if that sounds condecending, but that's the fact of the matter).

I thought that its legal to do it if you get it checked and signed by a Part P regulated party?

Where's that picture again? Oh yes, here it is....

Your gaff?

Cheers guys!! It's for a trypical extension. I've got 2 there already but I am going to add another 2.

The law is that you can do any electrical work in your own home as long as it is signed off by a qualified electrician. (If competent enough it's not worth doing this until you come to sell your house). Most electrical work is common sence really. If your stuck turn to the net!
