I'm getting a ball Python tommorrow and have a few questons hopefully someone can help me out. First off its going to be in a 30 gallon long. I'm going to be using a heating pad for under the tank and a heat lamp for the hot side of the tank. I plan on getting a ReptiTemp 500R thermostat which you are able two plug in two heat source to manage the temp. Here is my question now the cool side of the tank should be around 80 to 85 degrees F. Now the warm side should be around 90 degrees F. Now this thermostat is suppose to turn off the heating source and turn them back on as need to keep the right temp. Now since both side of the tank are going to be two different temps how will this work. Thanks for the replies.

Erm i would reccommend you ask on here although it is mainly for corn snakes they don't mind the odd question about other snakes and reptiles: www.snakepictures.co.uk

by heat lamp do you mean a bulb or a ceramic? If its a bulb you need a dimmer stat as a normal stat switches off and on and would be stressful but there again a bulb is not ideal for a ball/royal
If its a ceramic you can get away with usin a on /off stat but the best to use is a pulse stat

The stat works because you will have a sensor you put in the viv under the heater and that controls the temperature at that side of the viv and the heat gradiant works because obviously the side without the heater in will be cooler

For now its just gonna be a bulb because I don't have enough money right now to get a ceramic. So would you recommend me even getting a thermostate with a bulb and a heating pad or would you recommend me getting something else. Also I plan on putting the heating pad along the whole bottom of the tank including were the bulb will be is this a good idea.

What is a dimmer and pulse stat and do you know how much these are. Also would they work on the heating bad also.

A dimmer stat is the kind you use for lightbulbs rather than switching the bulb off when it reaches the right temp then back on when it cools down it dims the light.
A pulse stat sort of flickers the power through and is best for ceramic heaters so again it keeps the viv at a constant temperature rather than letting it heat up then switch off to let it cool then heat up again

a mat stat or temperature stat both switch the heating thing off when it reaches the temperature

sorry just noticed your not in the uk so not sure what they have over there
