I bought 8 tiger barbs today and when I put the bag on the table in the dining room it burst open and fish were all over the table. So in a rush I picked them up with my finger and thumb and dropped them in by hand.

Obviously I didn't have time to do the bag thing where you leave them in the bag for 30 mins and add in some water, they were pretty much just dropped in.

I've fed the fish and they seem ok, one seemed a bit dodgy at first but now they are all grouped together and swimming ok.

I'm guessing that Tiger Barbs are fairly hardy fish, so I'm being optimistic.

This happened about 1/2 hour ago. They seem fine now, but will there be any long-term problems now?

As long as there was nothing on the table such as residue from any cleaning agents the fish should be fine. Picking up fish with wet hands is no different than netting them with a wet net, you just don't want to be squeezing them. I do this on a regular basis when sorting angels.

They should be OK, they're hardy fish.

However, the thought of picking up fish gave me an odd idea- Can you throw flying fish like airplanes?

sorry to hear one died. I saw on another forum a man who smashed a 4ft tank with a hammer whilst putting up shelves above it.

Fish all over the floor, covered in dust and wer picked up by hand and placed into a variety of bowls before taking them to the LFS who thankfully had spaces to keep them for a month or so before he could replace the tank and get his living room mopped. :D

I think they all survived!

putting 8 fish in, in one go even with floiating the bag first etc, could have resulted in one dying, i,m sure they will be fine

Afraid you dug up an old thread.
