Grrr! Jagger (my red dwarf gourami) has taken his bullying too far!!! He has been charging the guppies for the past 2 days and this morning I wake up, turn on the tank lights, and find him charging 1 while the other hid. When the hiding one came out, his tail is completely split from tip to base right down the middle (it now looks like he has 2 tails).

So Jagger is now acclimating in the work tank. Grrr!! Stupid bully fish. Hopefully he'll forget his territory in a couple of weeks and he can go back. If not, I might have to rehome him.

Will Fabio (the guppy) be ok with a split tail? I know it won't heal up, I'm just hoping he'll be alright

you need to get another gourami asap before returing him to that tank, that way they will mess with each other rather than the fragile guppies
hope your tank is big enough :)
and i believe he will be fine, as long as he doesnt figure out his name

Oh believe me, adding another gourami is not the solution. Please don't do this.

Rearrange the decor and try reintroducing him in a week or so. He may forget his claim - I have to say after two weeks my dwarf still hadn't and he now lives alone.

Do you have plenty of plants?

As for Fabio's tail, good waterchanges and pristine conditions and it should heal up fine.

If the gourami is still a bully you could always keep him in that tank and put the guppies elsewhere.

+1, if you get another gouarmi and they pic on eacher they will probably do just as much damage and it will probably end up worse.

haha, not with my experiences and ive kept gouramis for years, lol
adding another always literally helped the problem dramatically
but do what ya want :)

Willowstwin has a 48 litre tank and to suggest keeping two male dwarfs in there is frankly irresponsible. Especially when one is already being territorial. You keep 5 in a 60 gallon tank, it's different. You must be very lucky never to have clashes over the years.

yup, no chance of me getting another. I've done my reading and that was never an option.

My plants consist of lots of moss for the shrimp, 2 big "bunches* of amazon swords (I intend to keep swapping them out when they get too big), and 2 bunches of another tall leafy plant, but I don't know what that is. Also, ornaments and arrangements to make hideyholes.

I'm going to try and get a stand for the work tank and bring it home. Then I can rearrange everything to suit all the fish.

He's quite happily exploring this tank at the moment. I'll give him 2 weeks and put him back and see what happens, first sign of trouble and he'll be back in here and I'll sort something out.

The guppy's tail will heal with good water conditions. I have a fancy guppy who was fin nipped by a danio andhad a split down the middle like you are describing. It's been a month, but it's almost completely healed, it's healing from the base out so he still has a small split towards the end.

oh that's good to know :) water change when I get in even though I tested this morning and it was fine. I'll keep my eye on him.
