Hello, have been bouncing around the forum now getting some exellent advice, quick bacground for those that may not know.

Have 2 fancies in an 18*10, don't shoot me i am already well aware of their faults and needs thanks to kitekat and others on the boards. We have sorted the new tank which will be a centrepiece in our living/dining room. We will get it in the next 3-4 weeks, its a 60*18*15 (L*H*W) nothing is decided on the decor or filterage yet. Obviously i'll be using the filter in the little tank (fluval200) to get it cycled asap. I figure if the filter is fine with the fish at present then it will suffice in the bigger tank while the replacement filter comes up to speed. Personally i fancy sticking with the coolwater fish.

Now, Pepperd cory's were suggested to me and with the vast amount of infomation out there the one thing that stands out is a lot of it argue's with its self so....... This is the forum to ask i figure.

At the minute the prospective stocklist comes out as 2 fancy goldfish and ?10 pepperd cory's.

There are a few smaller uk fish and shrimp, are there options i could look into there, i have to admit the kids and the missus are sold on the fancies, not really my bag TBH i would love a cross section of an english stream as i think the uk has amazing fish/shrimp without the tropicals. I'll forgive the cory's as the tank is perhaps a little small for a uk catfish :hey: and they are fasinating the way they zip about.

So far this forum has moved me on massively in my knowledge of fish and their habitat and its appreciated so sorry if i'm repeating anything. I have seen plenty of people ask the questions AFTER getting the fish. That is something i'm not prepared to do.

Cheers J

Hmm about the filter thing. You might want to put some of the mature filter from the old one into the new one, and that way it might cycle faster.

Now I'm not incredibly sure so wait to double check with someone more knowledgeable... but I'm pretty sure cories like the lowest of 72 so I don't know what temp you'll be keeping it at but temps lower than this can cause problems...

Some "cold" water cories are c. adolphoi, aenus (bronze, probably would be easier to find this), agassizzi...

C. paleatus (aka Peppered Corys) are a good choice for a goldfish tank. They can live in temperatures down to the low 60's F.

I've been told i should heat the tank but have a target temp of 18,19 deg which i understand is about right for the fancies too.

If you plan to keep them inside your house, it's usually harder to keep the water temperature down in the low ranges than to keep it warm enough for that kind of fish. If it's particulary cool where you will have them, then do get a heater if only to serve as a back up.

It would be a real shame to use such a big tank for rather uninteresting fish like goldies in my opinion. :( Center piece tank with goldies in....i cant actually think of anything less interesting :)

You and me both, to that end and with my daughter after a gerbill(yeuk) i said she could have a tank in her room instead. She is thrilled to take on the goldies so that leaves the big tank free to whatever i please. :hyper:

So i'll pop a what if question in the general discussion for ideas.......
