I should be getting my new aquarium this weekend. (Such a long wait for the cabinet to be made) I can't wait to get started. One of the first jobs I will be undertaking is to paint the tank background. For asthetic purposes which colour would bring out the best visually. Black or Blue. My tank will be positioned in the hallway of our home near the front door which has sidelights in the frame. Would it be advisable to paint the side panes of the tank as well to cut down on sunlight entering the aquarium.

fish always look great against a blue background :good: :fish: .

black is defiantly my personal choice

Black for me too.. With regards to painting the sides, i would start off by NOT painting the sides and waiting to see if this causes an algae problem. It depends on the position of the tank in the hallway. If it is a long thin hallway, then the side view into the tank becomes used quite often as you walk down the hall. If the sides cannot be seen in the hallway., then i may consider it, but otherwise no.

black without hesitation here is my tank with a black background. it makes all the corals and fish stand out

Are we talking like direct sunlight on the aquarium? And for how long? Or is it more like sulight is near the tank and the hallway is bright?

Black gets my vote :good:

Usually black for me in SW, I've used blue and black and I perfer black, it brings the color out more like already stated.

Exactly Fletch. Not direct as such.
I'll go with black by popular concensus.
Thanks everyone.

My 29gallon fw tank is in direct sunlight from a window and doesn't have much algae problem. I wouldn't paint the sides either and just see how it goes.

best of luck :good:

I would say try something new! Use some colors that others haven't. See how they are!
