I awoke the other morning to find Mr Kidd, my fantailed goldfish floating lifelessly on the surface of his tank. Following 15 mins of resuscitation (ie. blowing into the poor mites face) signs of life slowly returned and Kidd was more or less ready to fight another day, despite literally swimming on his side and not eating.

Thanks to postings on this forum I hand fed Kidd crushed peas and followed your instuctions carefully and can happily inform that Mr Kidd is now swimming upright, divebombing Mr Wynt and generally looking a lot better after his near death experience.

Thanks Guys.

Don't get the wrong idea here folks, I didn't do anything untoward to the fish!

What I did was hold it about a foot away and blow short blasts of air at its mouth, obviously taking enough care to not blow Mr Kidd up, like James Bond did in Goldfinger. It's eye's moved first, then it's mouth in a sort of 'bob-bob' fashion. After a few longer gentler blows, it's gills started opening and it's colour returned, and that's when I returned Mr Kidd to the water.

I'm not a vet, but I think maybe this swim bladder infection doesn't kill the fish, but kind of shuts it down, another person on this forum had one 'come back to life' so I do wonder.

Mr Kidd his now eating his greens, other than that, I'll starve him til saturday then buy some sinking food, I think the fish flakes are to blame for his health scare.

In fact, to add to my previous comment, I recommend that everyone try 'CPR' on their fish!!

I wonder how many people flush their pride and joys away, not realising that maybe they still have time to spend with them...

...and my missus said that fish were easy to look after??!

Come on peeps, Give it a go!!

;)

OMG I DIDNT KNOW IT COULD BE DONE! but how can you give it cpr through its mouth when it breathes through gills!??

I've no idea! Perhaps the blowing simply loosened a blockage of some variety, I guess I'll never know. One things for sure though, I'm well chuffed! :D

Technically swozzie, you're wrong. The gills are located behind the head, but the opening for the intake of water is through the mouth. I guess blowing on it might do some good, but I have some very strong doubts. If air was much good to the fish, why can't they live out of the water?

awesome,aweome and congrats

I used a similar method on a goldie many years ago, he was as near dead as possible and using a straw to bob him back down when he'd float up and to blow air in, he came back to life in a big way. His same ole self, only a bit of cloud eye as a memory.
