Hi everyone, I am new to tropical fish keeping. I bought my first eva fish 2 wks ago. I got a red wag plattie, an albino rainbow shark, a red sword fish and a red onion snail. (I know that is alot of red but my autistic son choose them.) Lol.

After 10 days I did a water change and found a baby fish in my tank. It is so minute. I dont know which fish has had the baby so i dont no wot type of fish it is. I do no there is deffinatly only one as i have seperated it into a basket that sits at the top of my tank.

I dont no how long it will take for the fish to grow, at the moment it is so small it doesnt even show up on a photograph. I also dont no wot to feed it. Infact i really dont no much. Any advise wud be welcomed. Many thanx. xxx

That baby you have is a platy baby. You can crush/grind up some of your tropical fish flakes and feed that to him for now. You can buy breeder nets at the petstore, and pre-made fry food. A breeder net is a little net that attaches to the sides of your tank, and it seperates fish.

Good luck and congrats!
P.S. Would type more, but I have to go now! Am really busy! Sorry!

I'm not an expert in the fry field but i'd bet any money it's your plattie. You will have bought a pregnant female, dont worry most platties are pregnant when they are bought.

As far as feeding goes i think you can use very crushed up flakes and theres something else but i cant remember what. You'd have to check with other members on that.

What size is your tank as i'm unsure about your stocking. Don't quote me on it but i'm not sure it's a good mix, other members far more knowlagable than me will be able to tell you.

Did you cycle your tank?

Welcome to the forums i'm sure you will learn alot here and everyone is very friendly.

:good: :good: :D

Thanx. The tank hold 45 pints of water. Not sure wot that is in galons as i had the tank given to me. Its a small round tank and i can feel the addiction kicking in already and can see me upgrading to a bigger tank at sum point. ha ha. Yeah i cycled the tank for a wk b4 i added my first fish and have dun one water change so far. Although the water is now going abit green but i dont want to put too much stess on the baby by doing another water change.

Also my son has named the baby fish blacky as it has black eyes. If it is a plattie does anyone no if its eyes will change colour wen it gets bigger as that could b a disaster. lol.

The eyes will probably stay that colour, but the body colour will change. :)

I think your tank is about 10 gallons.

Thanks for everyones advice so far. Its good to no its name shud stil b fitting. lol. Does anyone know how long it wil take until the baby is ready to be added into the main tank and wot i shud do about the algae greeny water until then.

A week isnt enough to cycle a tank and if you are planning on keeping those fish you WILL have to upgrade.

Effectively you are doing a fish in cycle do you have a water test kit you need to be changing water very regularly and treating it with de chloronator.

Your fry should be ok provided you keep up with water changes.

I susppected that but wasnt sure.
I just knew they got big

Your best getting rid of the shark unless your planning on a very large tank. I think they get territorial too so may become agressive.

Best to take it back :good:

Ohhh Thanx for the info. I have bin doing lots of water changes and have de chlorianted the water. The fish seem happy enough. HMMMMM as for the shark i wasn't told it grew that big. I must admit i forgot to ask wot size it wud grow to but i did tell them how big my tank was. Thanx for the advice. xxx

Welcome to the forum

Do you have the tank near a window? or in a lot of direct sun light ? this could be the cause of you green water and is easy to cure once you have moved it

Well they dont get that big... i think about 6 inches.

They just need lots of space to swim and a part of the tank to call their own, they get rather territorial i think.

No tank int near the window. I pre thought that before i set it up to save on cleaning. lol. I did a large water change yesturday and it seems to have settled down abit now. Fingers crossed it wil stay that way.

As for the shark i have noticed today it is getting a little teritorial, im going to monitor the situation but think i shall prob b looking for a new home for it. My baby fish seems to b doing really well and seems more active, tho it is stil way too small to even show up in a photograph.xxx
