I noticed my breeding pair of BNs had laid eggs in a shell and "daddy" BN was in there looking after them. I moved them in to a net "cage" in the tank so when they emerged my other fish wouldn't eat them. Last night I saw that some of the eggs had moved from the bottom to the top of the shell and had tails! This morning, these eggs were out of the shell and all over the place in the net "cage." They are still wiggling about. Does anyone know if they will be ok like this? They are safe from other fish but should they stay near dad until they are fully hatched out of the eggs?

Congrats on the spawn!

They will be absolutly fine on there own. I have a clutch of Longfin egg dad decided to kick out so I placed them in a breeding trap like you have and they hatched yesterday. Is there any current flowing through the ''net''? They will take about a week to absorb the egg sack and then they will start to look more like mini Mum and Dads lol

They have hatched already the little yellow balls you can see is their yoke saks it will take them a few days to absorb this then they will just be minature version of their parents so everything is fine :good:

Excellent :hyper: I have an internal filter placed at the opposite end of the tank (4 foot long) which moves the water round and through the net. This is the second batch in less than 4 months these BNs have had! And they've had at least 5 over the last year and a half. This is the first time I've actually moved the "cave" into the net before the eggs have hatched as before I wasn't aware until the free swimmers came out, so I was a bit worried when I saw eggs with tails out the "cave!" Thanks!!!

No problem, I must admit they do look a bit odd lol. Its amazing really just how quick they grow!

Anyway keep us posted on there progress :good:

congratulations well done, my bristle dad kick his eggs out so put them in a breeding net, they hatched soo cute.then my swordtails and platties sucked them though the net. me and my son was so upset. we have a load of babies from a couple of months ago which are doing great. well done again

I'll have to watch out for the other fish doing that, thanks for the warning. Though my tank is rather lacking of other fish at the moment, just an angelfish that guards the filter end (when the food gets dropped in!) and some docile tetras of various types. It's a very BN dominated tank! There's at least 20 at various ages (not counting the newest batch) :)

Very sad  Checked the net this morning and most babies are dead. Saw 2 still moving about. I've got a feeling this is my fault as I put some treatment in the water for algae control yesterday and it could have been too much for the tiny BNs. I'm sure my breeding pair of BNs will waste no time having more though!
