Hi.

I got a great present on Christmas day - my female bristlenose died :byebye:

SOme basic background:

She was bought with a male several months ago as a breeding pair. A tank full of their young were also in the shop. The female has always stayed more or less hidden, generally under the Juwel filter housing. The male is approx. 6", the female 5" (including tails). For about a week I had noticed that the female was taking to stationing herself at the top of the filter box behind the outlet pipe where I was able to see that her tummy was getting quite rounded. On Christmas Eve she was suddenly sitting on the gravel, in the open, motionless. This not at all normal as she is normally shy and very skittish. Several fish brushed past her but she did not even flinch - she just rocked when they touched her as if she were dead :-( She was alive though as every know and again she would move her mouth around a bit. Her belly was really fat - like a weeble.

The next day she was in a big clump of plants head first. I gave her a hours to try not to disturb her but her colour was too dull so I fished her out of the plant - she was dead. :/ :-(

Why did she die? Do they sometimes succomb when pregnant? No-one else in the tank is ill. Her vent was white and (in comparison to the males whose vents I get to see  ), was protruding a bit and was white in colour. Does this mean anything?

Sorry for rambling on, any help greatly appreciated ;)

A mournful Cava :fish:
