So i just received my order of fish supplies this morning i bought online. I bought a small Azoo filter as it was on sale. I did not have an idea what to use as media so i got 12 pack of the filter pads to replace as it was only 5 dollars. I do plan to customize it regardless but i want to know what have you guys been able to fit in this small filter. I am not using this as a primary filter but a secondary filter in a heavily planted 10 gallon tank. The primary Filter is an aquaclear 50 which set at minimum flow rate runs about 66 GPH. Bacteria is suppose to colonize in the filter better at slower flow rates if i am not mistaken. I was thinking of putting in some Ammo Chips since there is a small amount of room even with both of the filter pads the filter brought.

Here is the filter http://azooaz.com/products/filtration/mignon-power-filter-60/

I also picked up a new heater as i have broken almost all my previous heaters and got a new tank about 5 months ago that needs a heater. I decided to try out the new fluval M series heaters. I wont install it until winter comes along as it is summer and no need for it. I would like to hear any experience people may have had with these.

I would like to hear experiences too. Any new equipment is nice to hear about from someone using it themselves.
On the subject of ammo chips, avoid them. Unfortunately they do exactly what they say they will do which is rob your filter biological colony of any ammonia right up to the time the ammo chips become exhausted. Then, since you have not developed any biological processing capability, your fish will think they have been placed suddenly into an uncycled tank, because they have been. If you are not monitoring the tank chemistry closely, a lot of damage can be done by the ammonia spike that results before you catch on to the problem. A cycled filter will never do that to you.

well thanks for the advice. I really would love to avoid that problem with the ammo chips. I just need to find some effective media to put in that space. Has to be a loose media since no sort of bag can fit in that extremely small space. Maybe i can just use whatever media that comes in a bag and take a portion of it. Any recommendations are appreciated :)

With an area designed to hold loose fill material, take a look at any of the ceramic media. The one I have at the moment happens to be Seachem Matrix. I buy large enough bulk quantities that I use the same kind for a few years until I run out and then buy another bulk quantity of something. Since it simply never goes bad, the shelf life encourages me to get a large container at a better price and just store whatever I don't use right away.
