Does anyone currently own an axolotl? I had one for about 13 years and I'm interested in getting another... except I can't find them anywhere anymore. My guess is that they're more available in the US, but how many other axolotl owners are out there?
I just love them!

I am seriously thinking of putting one in my bubble tank, because I have heard of how tough they are and that they have a long life span. I have been looking for some around in my area, but I haven't been able to find someone that carries them regularly, but I have found shops that can order one for me. What are your experiences with axolotls?

Cool, you won't regret getting one, but they can't really live amongst other fish unless they're raised in the same aquarium when they're small.
I bought a tiny one when I was 9 and he was about 4" then. He cohabitated with all the other fish in the aquarium, but soon began snapping at the kuhli loach when he became about 6". I had to take him out... Anyways, he lived in various aquariums I had for about 13 years or so. They're really cute, mine was actually a white one - not an albino, his eyes were black, but he was so cute! I have a picture of him I'm planning on scanning and posting here. I'll let you know when it's up.

But they eat just about anything. I gave mine worms from the garden, but realized you shouldn't do that too often. Sometimes he'd eat 3 in a row and his little legs couldn't touch the ground because he bloated. :( He ate pieces of raw meat too... I can't remember what more I read about them, but there are some fantastic axolotl websites out there believe it or not! Tons! More so than I've found for plecos even. Just do a search and you'll find some. There's one out of a university in the states that's excellent. I guess they're studying them there and all the info you need about how to care for them is there.

They are indeed very hearty! Once my pH was 3! :( It happened when I was away and no one properly looked after the aquarium for me. His gills had shrunk back significantly and he had some kind of "rot" on his tail, so I quickly fixed up his water again and he was fine.
I think they like room temperature. Anyways, they're so easy to care for, that's the best part, and they do live a very long time.
If you get one - enjoy! I'd like to see some pics too if you get to uploading any, and I promise you as soon as I can find where my husband stashed our scanner cable, I'll upload my photo of my old one.

Oh yes, they like music too :) I had a walkman with 'bud' ear phones and I'd tape to two of them to the one corner of the aquarium. Each time I'd turn music on and turn it up, he'd come swimming over to the corner and just sit there... ha ha they have such dopey smiles all the time, they're great!

:D
I was just talking to someone the other day about Axolotls! Im from NewZealand and they seem to be quite common to get and stuff, but now I am in the Uk and no one I know has really heard of them, also known as mexican walking fish, they are great! such strange creatures, I didnt realise they lived so long! d:D

Starry^

 I bought one of these a few days ago(its albino)Id never seen them before. The fish shop woman told me they would live quite happily in my large community tank!!Now Ive read up about them Im terrified that its going to eat all my fish, frogs, crabs etc.will it?It seems pretty docile-hangs out in a cave and wanders up and down a bit?Do I need to be worried? :look:

Get the axolotl into its own tank ASAP! They grow up to be very aggressive indeed, axolotls are notorious for maiming EACH OTHER when put together, so lord only knows what it'll do to smaller stuff!
