Well I would like to get an axolotl; I know I can't use gravel and I dont' want a bare bottomed tank. I am just wondering what options there are except for sand and large pebbles?

Also what are the advantages and disadvantages of sand and pebbles? Which do you prefer?

Sand is a nice substrate, easy to clean and the animal isnt going to choke on it.
The downside though is if your just dropping pellets to the bottom of the tank it increases the chance of sand ingestion which can lead to impaction. Which is where sand cloggs up your animals digestive tract.

Pebbles are also a nice substrate, ideally large pebbles.
Small Pebbles can be ingested and lead to the animal choking to death or blocking up the animals digestive tract.
But large pebbles nullify that effect. Make sure the pebbles are smooth as well :)

Ideally unless you're going to be hand feeding the animal midway-surface of the water
Large river pebbles are the ideal substrate
