Well, lately I've become very interested in axolotls, and am hoping to get a pair at some point in the next few months. However, in all the research I've done, the one answer I have not been able to come up with is whether or not you can breed albino axolotls with "normal" ones. I'm assuming that you can and that albino would be recessive, resulting in a bunch of heterozygous "normal" axolotl, but I honestly have no idea, so if someone knows the answer I'd greatly appriciate the help!

Also, it seems that axolotls need 20 gallons, for one and two, but what about more. How much extra space do three or four axolotls need?

Thanks for reading! ^_^

hi there,

yes. you can breed two of different colours. It would be quite exciting to see what mixes you get.

in my opinion one axolotl requires atleast a 3ftLx1.5ftWx1ftH tank to themselves . That makes out at just under 30 G. Axolotls can and will easily reach a foot in length.
for a breeding pair, i would recommend a 4ftLx1.5ftWx1ftH.

These sound pretty big. but when you think how big they can get....

and by the way. i currently have some baby axolotls. so if you definately think you are up for one or two. let me know, :good:

any more Q's just ask!

cheers

Thankies! The more I hear, the more sure I get that I would like a breeding pair of axolotles! :hyper: and compared to a large community fish tank, an axolotl tank is still an okay size...

yep, they are great pets. i have a big ish albino. they love eating fish pellets, prawns, bloodworms and earthworms are a big favourite.

Oh, albino are probably the prettiest, in my opinion. oh and yeah, I read that they can't be fed flakes, which sounds expenisive, but also fun! I'd love to try feeding them live fish!

My great aunt used to own an axolotl, but it died a while back. If she still has the aquarium, she might let me use it, which would be a lot cheaper than buying a new one! ^_^

i wouldn't recomend live fish. not really very nutritional and can carry diseases. better off feeding what i recommended above. not really that expensive. although im not sure about prices in germany as i have never been :)

Ive got a leustic and a melanoid who have spawned just recently...the eggs are about to hatch! :D

Oh yeah, I forgot to consider that. The prices aren't too bad. I have some frozen food for my swordtails. They love bloodworms, but hate beefheart. :X

Congradulations, Connorsbala! sounds exciting. is it their first spawn...?

ye beefheart doesn't tend to go down too well with average communitys in my experiences. It works with piranhas i hear though!

I can't imagine why! lol! Having a pirhana would be pretty cool, except that they need huuuuuuge tanks.

Hmmm...it would be great though to have something to eat up all this extra beef heart I have now. -_- silly tropical fish, why must they be so picky? :fun:

hmm. I have necer tried feeding beefheart to my axolotls. Try it but only a tiny part. as it is VERY fattening stuff for fish. They may well eat it when they get to the 7-8" mark but will probably not eat it when very young (2-3")

Yeah so I heard. Yet another reason why beefheart will be hard to get rid of. ugh. As for size, it shouldn't be a prob. All the axolotls I saw at the petstore are at least six inches big if not more!

cool, they may eat it at that size. axolotls have individual personalitys. one might like it but the other might not.

if you dont mind me asking. how much are they over there?

They're twenty euros. Well, at least in the petstore that I saw them in anyway, haven't seen them anywhere else...
