For a while now I've had a tank set up for a bubble eye goldfish, but after months of searching for one I ended up giving up. Anyway I'd like to get an axolotl, I remember my brother had them when we were really little and they were great fun.

Anyway the tank is works out to be 17.6 us gallons or 66l. Its about 37cm wide, 60 long and the 30 deep. From what I've read its good size for a single axolotl. Its been set up for a bubble eye goldfish so has smooth river rocks as substrate and a pump that turns the tank over 9 times per hour, but it can easily be turned down. The filters a wet dry trickle filter, currently with no media, but I can just take some from another tank.

Is there anything I'd need to change for an axolotl? and as for diet frozen bloodworms, freeze dried tubifex and some type of pelleted food as well as live earthworms'd do right?

Oh and are they jumpers at all? nothing I've read on the net indicates they are, but I thought I'd check as the tank is open top.

Thanks
Emma

It cant be 37 cm wide! That woudnt wor out to be 17 us gals. If it was thats to short for axies, they can get to 30 cms them selves!

Freeze dried tubifex, frozen bloodworm and the other thing should be fine, not to sure about the pellets and the clour enhancing ones wouldnt do much good...would be az waste of money. They seem to eat all types of pellets, catfish ones so you could try those shrimp pellets

Might have a go with the shrimp pellets. I need to have some type of pellet based food, as sometimes I'm unable to make it home to feed the fish. So my parents have been "trained" LOl, but my Mum point blank refuses to feed actual meat or live food so need to have a pellet backup. Well will order the shrimp pellets a bit later on, as after looking at the axys for sale at the local pet stores, I think I'll wait it out and get a healthy one from a good pet store, it'll just be bout 4 weeks till I can get there.

Hi Emma,

If you wnated an axolotl you would need your ph to 7.0 because axolotls like hard water. Axolotls eat worms pellets and small fish the also eat frozen beef but keep that to a minimum. Axolotls cannot be kept with other fish especially bubble eye goldfish as those 2 bubbles are bladders and the axolotl will put his teeth into it and rip it horrible!!

You should not touch your axolotl as your hands have parasites that create fungus on the axolotl skin, thats what happened to my axolotl but hes alive because I gave him Wardleys fungus ade

Axolotls like their water to be 14 degrees to 20 degrees any higher and your axolotl will get a heart attack and die, you can achieve this by everyday putting an ice block in the tank.

hope that helps
