Ok...since I only have two small tanks and a few fish,I have just been using a large fishbowl to quarantine a single addition at a time.To start,I just put them in with the water they came in,gradually adding/changing clean treated water. So far, this has worked really well.I test the water and watch for any sign of stress.

So yesterday we brought home a pretty little neon tetra. The fish seemed just fine when I went to sleep, but was dead when I woke up this morning :-(
I wonder if he was simply a weaker or ill fish,or if I did something wrong

I can take him back and get another.Just not sure if I should tell Koda jr that he died.I always hate that part because he's such a critter lover that any loss breaks his heart. On the bright side...all the others are doing well. Our ADF seems happy in with the others in the 5g tank :)

if you think you could get away with it I would just replace him before your little one notices. i could not get away with it with my youngest though, she has caught me before :(

I wouldnt put tropical fish in a bowl, they need a heater and filtered water.
I would never do it as a long term thing. But with the desk lamp near it the water tends to stay around 76.It just seemed like a good way to observe a fish for a couple of days.But...I could always make this a good reason to go tank shopping :)

i am so sorry about your fish
i can honestly say its the only part of fish keeping that i both dread and hate :(
i wouldn't go for the bowl thing either (even as short term)
some fish are weaker then others and neon tetras in most places (especially smaller, younger neons) are quite weak
they need airation in the water aswell as heat
if you are confident that the lamp steadily heated the bowl without overheating then that would be fine but they still need water circulation/ air in the water
i think it would be easiest to go down to your local walmart and buy a 1 gallon tank
or even a 10 gallon? :dunno:
they are cheap at walmart
and you wouldn't have to risk losing your fish in the quaranteen process

I don't really think you did anything wrong, it's not ideal, but it's okay...
If it's a comfort, I think neons are not very good at adapting...
When I buy a school of 10 fish, there are always 1 or 2 fish that die the first days, and after that no fish die anymore...

Neons are weak fish. Lately I've discovered just how weak when I found that they couldn't always even make the car trip home and would die in the bag during a 20 mins car ride.
