Hey all, I lost my job this week and it looks like my girl and I are moving to a different town about two hours away. I have a 29 gallon tank to move--luckily I hadn't gotten around to fully stocking it yet but I do have three danios and a pleco. Is it safe to mostly drain the tank and then move them?

I would empty the whole tank, gravel and all. :(

EDIT: I just wouldn't risk it. I transport the fish seperatly. Yes, you'll have to re-cycle the tank, but with some use filter material, it'll be a breeze. 2 hours is a long ride with gravel, decorations. :)

EDIT again: Just my opinion though, Ive heard of tanks cracking under stress while moving.

mm i think a good idea would be.... the last thing on moving to the new house would be the tank ;) and keep a 50% of the water alredy cycled and move it to the new house and pour it into the tank when you are ready i dunno :dunno: just and idea :)

hope that helped :)

Your best bet will be to net the fish and put them in a tupperware container or tub if possible with maybe 5 or 10 gallons of water. Drain the water, empty the gravel into a bucket and move it. If you get a rubbermaid tub that's large enough you can just hang your filter over the edge and let it run while you set up the tank in the new house. Best of luck to you and your daughter! :)

A while back I moved a 120 Litre tank by just putting the fish in a seperate container and drained as much water as possible. But the tank was in a cabinet hence no worries about stressing the tank, I just moved it wholesale.

I also took a seperate bucket and kept the filters submerged to help save the bacteria.

you wont have to recycle the tank if your careful... and it isnt the water that is cycled :/ its the filter.

should be pretty easy to do if you do everything in the right order.. are you usuing external filters or internals?

will post exactly how to do it.
