Automatic overflow

I'm thinking of making an overflow for my aquarium, have seen a few ideas in the web. Would be grateful for ideas and advice here, has anyone done it?

You could drill an overflow (But it's not without risk).
Greg Sage of Select Aquatics uses (Tour here [see 5:35]) uses a pvc external loop watering system for his 120 tanks. It a bit of a 'plumbers nightmare', but it works for him and seems pretty reliable.

The Juwel 350 is a nice tank, great size. I had one of those at one point.

Trouble for was the height of the tank, very difficult to reach into the tank to try and move plants or decor etc without getting the top half of your body wet!

Am an average height chap and this is with steps as well.

As for reaching the rear corner of the tank, you have to lean on the front bowed glass and this always made me nervous in case I cracked the glass or anything like that, near impossible sometimes not to lean on that front glass.

But luckily nothing ever happened and it’s pretty strong glass.

So just be aware of that and would advise you to go into the LFS and look at one of these yourself and consider things like reaching into the tank, especially back of tank, as it’s quite a high tank on the stand.

Beautiful tank though and lots of options for stocking and as long as you’re aware of things like that, go for it.

But as for your query about overflow, never tried this and not have much ideas on how to go about that sort of thing but a nice idea though. Sorry not much help on that!

Do keep us up to date about that and if you do go ahead and then perhaps start a journal about this, I’d be interested in see this for sure.

DIY - I've seen a few designs and not sure what direction to go in.

Unfortunately I am still working on my aquarium stand, building my overflows are next on my list. What I plan on doing...

Leftover from another project, I have 1/2" thick flat PVC material which I will cut into squares and glue them on both end of a 3" PVC pipe. I am doing both ends to make it easier when running thru the table saw. I will use the table saw to cut the slots for the weir on one end of the pipe then I will cut the pipe in half making 2 overflow boxes.

I will use my router on the bottom of the overflow to remove the excess 1/2" PVC material then cut off the 1/2 PVC still glue on top of the weir. Paint it black using Krylon Fusion paint.

I hope to have some pictures by next week, sorry about that.
