O.k, the nitrate spike is waay too lethal for the fish and it is taking too long. Like I said, I am going to put the fish in another smaller tank while I fix the problem. The tank that is being fixed is the ten gallon. My quarantine tank is 2 gallons (2.5 gallons excluding the algea rock for the pleco, the filter, and the gravel).

Now, the nitrate level is currently 80.0. Should I leave the fish in the ten gallon for the night or should I go ahead and put the fish in the quarantine tank or should I leave them in the high nitrate tank for the night? I took care of chlorine and heavy metals in the quarantine tank, I put a rock from the old tank in that has algea, and I did all the nessecary water tests. I basically took every procedure, filter and all. :)

Hi commander. Have you tested your tap water for nitrates? If they're not high coming out of the tap, why not do a 30% water change tonight and test the nitrates. Unless your tap water has really high nitrates, that should bring them way down. Then, test again tomorrow and do another w/c if necessary. Did this tank just finish cycling? Also, if you can get your hands on some duckweed to float on the top of the water, it will suck up a lot of nitrates for you. Hornwort is good for this, as well.

Hey ya'll. I haven't even put water in the tank. I just emptied it of nitrate infected water. Now I will be filling it again with pure tap water that will be treated for chlorine. I will do cycling also. Don't worry about the bacteria. The tank should cycle fast as I have kept everything that was in the old tank. I even left a bit of old gravel.

My question. I just emptied the tank of gravel and water. Now I rinsed it in cold water and emptied it. should I put water in the tank now? (yes, I am awar i need to let it cycle for days before I put the fish in.

Wow, I have the new blue gravel. Let me say I have never seen my aquarium looking nicer. It used to be dull brown gravel with dull lights and dull water.

Now it is bright blue gravel with sparkling water, and a blue illuminated scene. It looks mystical. However I am aware that is not gonna remain that way if I toss the fish back in. I will wait a week for da tank to cycle and for everything to balance. Any suggestions as to what I should do? :shifty:

the best water treatment IMHO is prime. It even neutralizes nitrates and nitrites. Might want to get a small bottle of cycle too. Most good lfs carry both of these products
