Well my Orange VT Asoleado used to live in a 5 gal tall hex tank which he and i were perfectly happy with, sand substrate, plastic plants and a nice little cave to shelter in while i do water changes. So today i was trying to see if my devider would fit(i was going to add another betta) and it did, except there was a small gap to the side and i was abit worried one of them could get through it, so i tried putting it in the other way and all was going smoothley then CRACK! a whole cracked open in the side of the tank and water came gushing out onto the carpetand everywhere, so i quikly scooped Asoleado and put him in a breeders net in my 40 while i figured out what to do, and i got a spare 10g out and quikly filled it up and put the heater in and already cycled filter(always good to have a spare running in your other tanks) and went to go grab Asoleado but he wasnt in the net, i searched franticly throught the rocks in my Mbuna tank and say my Lab Hongi bullying him in the corner, i had my net already so getting him was no problem but his fins are abit more ripped then before and he is alittle shook up(should be okay in no time).
So now he has a 10/15 gal all to himself and im currently slowly acclimatizing him to the temp, but he seems okay.
So this scraps the plan of deviding the tank because the 10/15 gal is shorter in diameter then the hex, oh well.

Just thought id share my disaster story

Poor guy. you should keep him in the ten gallon, that way, you could put more dividers in for more bettas.
How exactly did the tank crack anyway?

I don't know how it broke really, it was ab it of a tight fit for the devider and i think i pushed a bit to hard and the devider cracked the tank.
He's out now exploring his new tank, i'll probably get some cories as tank mates for him

Those hex tanks break easily. I had one as well; I was in the process of cleaning it when it slipped slightly and hit the side of the sink. Now, I was about 1 inch away from the sink's edge, and the tank was almost completely empty, so the little tap is suffered shouldn't have done much, but the damn thing split right in half! Thank god there were no fish in it.
I personally *hate* those tanks anyways. You can never get a clear look at your betta because of all the corners, they are too deep and not long enough for the preferred environment of the betta, and the filtration is often too strong near the surface. I only have one of those tanks now, and am currently using it as an "acclimation tank" for my new betta; I have it filled to 2.5 gallons with no filter running, just to get him used to more space. I don't think I'll ever use it as a permenant home again.

Anyways, I'm done ranting. I'm glad to hear your betta is ok! Sounds like he had a mighty rough day; too bad. Hopefully he'll enjoy his new digs, and possible tank mates.

Standard 10g and 15ghighs have the same length and width. They just differ by height. Many LFS sell dividers for tanks of these dimensions. But your betta may enjoy the space. Fasolt enjoys sharing 15g with rasboras and corydoras. Sorry your tank broke, that bites.

That is a beautiful name for your fish, Asoleado.

RW - yeh it was a crap tank, but when i rescued Asoleado, i had no where else to put him. I never even used the filter because it was so bad.

lljdma06 - I'll probably try and make my own devider :)

Thanks guys

Wow, lucky you were quick DD!

I reckon the reason those hex tanks are more vulnerable to crack is because there are so many panels of glass, if one side gets damaged the whole thing is caput.

Yes, make your own divider, I made my own divider in my 5 gallon hex, and it fits perfectly. All you need to get is the dimensions, and the materials.

Dwarf Dude - Oh, I'm sorry; I didn't meant to come off as critisizing you. I was just commenting on the tanks in general. I'm sure he is a very well cared for, well loved fish! I just was cranky and felt the need to rant about my personal experiences with that type of tank. Sorry for the confusion!

I was agreeing with you, not taking offense.
I got that tank as a birthday present and it sat in my cupboard, and when i saw how bad a orange(well i thought he was yellow) VT was being treated, i bought it and set the tank up as it was perfect for him. The tank was crap, but there was no other choice, and yes he is a well cared for fish :D

P.S - Don't worry, you can rant in my threads anytime you like ;)
