In terms of endemic species, there are three species of genuine Cichlids from Asia, all are members of the genus Etroplus. The commonest is E. maculatus known as the Orange Chromide, E. suratensis is next, the Green Chromide, and E. canarensis is a later addition to the flock and is known as the Silver, or Pearl Spotted Chromide.
I don't keep Cichlids as a rule, but about 30 years ago, I had about a dozen E. maculatus as a rescue job. They were far too punchy for my tanks and I was glad to see the back of them when re-homed. Not unattractive though for a Cichlid keeper.
There are numerous hybrid Cichlids that have their roots in Asia though
All of those chromides are brackish water fish aren't they?? (despite some websites suggesting they can be freshwater).
Why don't you keep cichlids as a rule, any particular reason? Just curious, hobby wouldn't be as interesting if different peolpe didn't have different preferences!
