Asian biotope stocking ideas

While I do like the idea of breeding right now I dont think I will. I think for now I will just do a community tank. I am getting a pair of b. Persephone for my 10g and have a spacious15g for fry to be moved to. I think I will just focus on one breeding project for now.

Thanks colin, that gives me something to think about I'm the future. :)

For now, suggestions for a community?

I do like kuhli loaches lol. Do you think if I had 6 or 7 in a fairly dense tank they would come out?
And cherry shrimp
Some mystery snails
Some type of gourami
A couple shoals of rasboras?

I stand by my original selection for a community, Botia sidthimunki and a mouth brooding Betta. The loaches won't breed prolifically and the Bettas don't produce many young and you can sell any you produce.

If you want to add something else to the tank, add splashing tetras (Copella/ Copiena sp) or African Butterfly fish (Pantodon buchholzi). They aren't Asian but are different.

If I were to do splashing tetra would I need to lower the water level?

No need to drop the water level for splashing tetras. Just have a coverglass on the tank and have 1-2 inches of space between the water and coverglass. The fish can lay their eggs on the coverglass. You can get some green card and cut it into a leaf shape and put it on top of the coverglass to encourage the fish to spawn in that spot.

Hunting for Betta Pugnax:

In a 40 gal you can have a LOT of kuhlis, id say up to 20 even if you wanted as long as you didnt want other bottom dwellers. The more of a group you have, the less shy they are. And they have a very small bioload.

If you can find any, and unfortunately that is a huge if. I recommend betta brownorum.
