ok, i was looking for information on arrowarnas. i was in the fish shop and noticed they had blue, green and silver arowarnas. any difference apart fromt he colour? is the price about the same usually. really want one - and i do know they can grow huge but i have just bought a huge tank :)

How huge is the huge tank? What most people call huge is a bare minimum for aros.

Generally the best minimum size is a tank about 5 feet long and 30" front to back for a jardini or an asian araowana (the asians are often sold as grteen, reds or cross backs and many other names from breeders). The South American (silver, blue or black) aros tend to grow larger and can reach 30" or so and thus will really require a larger tank to happily accomadte them as adults.

I keep my arowana in a 125 gallon tank, 6 ft long 3 ft wide and like 2 and a bit ft high :D, silver arowana just got him yesterday with a clown knife, arowanas about 4-5", same with the clown knife... They're not too hard to take care of but (when smaller than 3") they are very fragile... I've never heard of green arowanas... If you get one, you can keep it in a smaller tank (such as a 55 gallon) for about a year (if it's less than 6" already) I was told they'll grow to about 1ft or more within a year  anyways, my guys need a bigger tank soon... Anyone think a 240gallon would be good???

well ive got a 5ft tank at the moment so a little one will be fine and im currently talking to a guy that will be able to sort me a huge huge tank for the arowarna and the rtc ive got. (and just to put your minds at rest the arowarna wont be in with the rtc till hes big enough) ive juat moved so i finally have te space to play a little.

the most common arowarna seems to be the silver one. might try finding one of those.

silvers are the most common, cheapest and the biggest growing aro it could reach 24" in a year

how bigs your rtc?

ok then whats the slowest growing arowarna lol.

my rtc is about 12 inches at the moment.....ive had him a while and he doesnt seem to be growing very fast

i dont think there are any slow growing aros
what is your price range for the arowana 10s 100s 1000s?
how big is the huge tank you just brought?

If your gonna get a silver your really gonna need the tank to be at east 32" wide, and probably 7 feet long...But then again if your going to be houseing the RTC properly, then your tank will be much bigger anyways...

 I don't now the exact measurements for my tank... I know it's 6ft long, like 2ft wide and the hight I guessed... it's roughly 125gallons, might be like 130...

i agree a adult silver aro will need 7x3x2
a adult rtc will need a tank/pond somewhere in the region of 10x4x4 but bigger is allways better can you provide this carina?

I doubt the aro could ever live with the RTC. The RTC will eat anything that will fit in is mouth, and will spend most of its life looking for things and checking if they will fit. the aro will be a nice thin body shape and perfect for the RTC to take down like spaghetti.

Someone on a forum (don't think it was this one) a couple of years ago tried to put a 15" Tiger Shovel cat in with an RTC of around 18". The first thing the RTC did was try and eat the TSN forcing a swift seperation.

Assuming you are lucky and have a small growing RTC which only maxes out at 3 foot (remembering they have hit 5 foot in captivity and over 6 feet in the wild confirmed - 8 feet unconfirmed) then to give the RTC any hope of enough room you will need a tank around 12x6 feet.

planet catfish calls them the most aggressive freshwater fish in the world and cannot be housed with anything at all,if the rtc cannot swollow its tank mates whole it will just take big bites out of them

green aro's are asian they require certficate and microchip which the seller should provide unless it is illegally caught as they are close to extinction but as many of you know HPlow he said they are over breeding them in farms so they may be taking them off the endangered lists which means the prices will come down :good:

Cane, i think youve got mixed up with the asian red tail cats, they are truely the most aggressive FW fish, but the amazonian red tail cats arent as bad... :good:
