are there any species of arowanas that could be kept in a 55 gallon tank? I'm thinking no, however, my LFS owner said yes... but then again, he also told me my eel was a FW fish when it definatly wasn't..

nope, mininum is 100g. and that would be a rarer more expensive kind, the asian arowana....like in me sig!!

silver and black arawana's can be kept singly in a minimum 55 gallon tank

......for about 2 months until they out grow it (depening on the size you buy at)

silver arowana have a max size of aorund 4ft and black top out at aorund 2ft usually in tanks. there fore a 100g Uk/120g US is the bare minimum for a single asian or black arowana for life. this would need to be atleast 2 ft wide aswell so 4x2x2 is the ideal minimum.

Silvers will need aorund 250-300 gallons minimum when full size and are more suited to heated ponds, or huge tanks to similiar afects.

Even a 120 isnt really suitable for life for any of the arowana species but would be ok for a grow out tank till the fish hits 18 inches or so. Arowana are very active fish and so the tank should ideally be at least 3 times the body length of the fish and of course at least as wide so it can turn around.

I was thinking this also. I would say nothing short of a 180 gallon (6' X 2' X 2') for a jardini, or asian. A 180 for a black would even be pushing it. ;)

yeah my bad, was thinking of what people said on a arofantics forum  show how much they care!!
Most of the guys from arofanatics live in Asia. Large tanks are considerably more expensive there. Most common large tank size i see is 4 X 2 X 2 (and usually fairly overstocked). But, other than smaller tanks, they take great care of their fish, their fish look superb!

I wasn't knocking the fish, all of those colours are amazing they manage to get on there.

But if you can afford the fish in the first place you should beable to afford the tank, my fish cost more than my tank!!

aside from being needy fish they are expensive too and in my opinion are kinda ugly anyway -_- but thats just me. iv accually heard 150 is the min.

The problem with a standard 150 is its only 18" wide. Length is great, but theres not enough turning space once it grows larger
