i don't know much about these fish but they never fail to amaze me. if all my time wasn't spend on bettas i would consider one for sure. they are apparantly the "in" fish in asia right now with loads of websites devoted to them. my wife tells me they even have arowana hospitals in thailand where they do surgery. i know certain species are illegal in north america as they can be very rare. a few months ago a co worker invited me over to his house to see his new tank (120 gallon). in it he had a silver arowana about 9 to 10 inches long. very impressive. i was amazed actually. sad story though, a week after i went and visited his fish died of a mysterious ailment. i think he swore off arowanas after it died and got some oscars for the tank instead. today we were wandering around the mall and went into a pet/aquarium store to look around (as i didn't know it existed) when i came upon this huge tank with this huge beautiful, powerful, omnipotent golden arowana. it must have been at least 20" long. he wasn't scared of anybody and gave me a fishy eye as i oohed and aaawed. pictures of an arowana in my life flashed before my eyes at that moment. i knew they could be expensive but just out of curiousity i asked the person working the aquarium section "how much for the arowana?" her answer..$3000 :p my response? "of course". ;)

my lfs has many, many arowana's and yes....they're quite pricey. $3000 though....

I'd love to have one some day  ,the lfs had some fry in a few weeks ago....barely 3",It would be so awesome to have one from that young and raise it

the price depends on the breed. if it is a silver, then they are relativly cheap at about £8-10, if you want a pearl arowana, these generaly sell for around £35. it is only the golden ones, scerelopages foroumus (spelling  ) that demand the high price. these come with a micro chip and a certificate. in asia, they go for a lot more money. some can go for 60,000+. they are a sighn of good luck in some countrys. they are a bit like koi in there price the price depends on the speciese and colouration.

wow they are a very nice fish, but for $3000  my dad would hang me if i spend that kinda money on a fish, I already got an earfull for spending that kinda money on modding my car(which was a bad investment, but loads of fun). Anyways I would probably get one if Iam making good money, maybe someday :p

i've always wanted one of these, they look so sleek but i've always been worried about tank sizes.

what do they need in the way of size??

My brother-in-law has raised arowanas before. I'll ask about what he knows and post it for you.

The minimum tank size for any species of arowana once full grown is 250 to 300 gallons. I currently have my 14" australian arowana (Scleropages jardini) in a 200 gallon tank and will have to upgrade some time in the future.

the fish in the pet store had a certificate and micro chip yup. felt sorry for it though as the tank was way too small. my friend tells me the shop has had that fish for a couple of years now.

I saw one today, and for a golden arowana that it is barely 4" long it was going for $2500 canadian dollar . I ask for the cheaper one "silver" which was $80 for a fry and the guy told me that he would be fine is a 33 g, but i didn't buy into that bs cause when i did my research on them this guys could grow up to 20" and that is huge! I was so tempted but i now that it would be stupid cause in 3 months i would be looking for a bigger tank to place it and i aint got the space for it...

Its best to keep them in a pond. with some fine netting across the top It wil have lots of swimming room and you can keep more feeders hidden n a pond.

I saw them at the store for $1300 each, and juveniles are at $120. I can get them for free at a nearby lake though...illegally. :shifty: :hey: :shifty:
