So my 90 Gallon blew a seal last night in the corner of the bottom and front glass panes, dumping half of the tank before i caught it. Ive read the post on how to reseal a tank but im unsure on wether or not i should reseal the whole tank or just that section it is a pretty old 2nd hand perfecto tank and it blew out about 5 inches of silicone. Can anyone point me in the proper path on this one? Does anyone know if a glass company will reseal the tank i would rather have it proffesionaly done so i am sure that it is properly done.

TH

P.S. Luckily i have a good friend who let me borrow his 30 gallon and i transferred some of the fish to that and some to my 29 G tank with no losses.

hi mine did the same this morning at the front right base ive tried reading the other posts but dont feel confident enough to take it apart its 260l with a curved front if you get some ideas please post them im usually good a diy but dont want to mess it up

personally i'd (or rather i'd get ian too...) take all the silicone off and start again.

silicone doesn't last forever and if it's broken now in one place I'd be really worried about it breaking elsewhere. if you think your DIY skills are up to it I'd wanna take it all apart and re-build it.

I agree, fix it once correctly & be done with it. Perfecto tanks are top of the line gear, a privately owned lfs who deals in aquariums should be able to reseal it or connect you with someone who can.

ive been trying for a week to find someone who can reseal a ferplas caymen 80 tank that i bought, no luck at all, have done it myself, waiting for the sealer to cure before i try it out (tomorrow!!) i just cut away the old silicone with a wood chisel flat end down, then got a Stanley knife blade ( looks like a hook on either end) got the rest of the silicone out then just cleaned & replaced it, dunno if it works will tell ya by tomorrow night though!

hi i tried the silicone but i think i didnt leave it to dry long enough. gonna try again tommorrow when i have the energy . i would hate to throw it out and i read another post that kinda said its mine who cares if i destroy it so im taking that advice getting out the stanley blade and hoping for the best i wont lie im a little excited to be doing this myself makes me feel proud . i need to finish this tank for my piranha they want more space so this tank was it i cant afford another as i know it sounds lame but i saved for it as i have kids and you know your hobbies are last on the pay list.lol but please if any more helpful hints pls advise ta very much 8)

Well ive talked to all of the local fish stores, and nobody knew of anyone who would be able to reseal it, i called all of the glass places in town and still no such luck :p So i think i have a DIY project on my hands. Im rather confident the resealing process but there is just one thing i am curious about...

Everywhere i have read said not to dig down inbetween the two panes of glass to remove the old silicone and that silicone will not stick to old silicone :shout: I guess im just confusing myself but it doesnt seem to make sense to reseal over the spot that the seal broke, i guess im just supposed to clean out as much as i can without digging inbetween the panes of glass and try to press as much of the silicone inbetween the glass as i can...

I was also thinking a good picture explanation of how to reseal a tank would be good for the site so i may have my hand at that. If anyone can answer the above question it would be very helpfull.

Thanks

TH

done it!!!!! :p :good: , tank sealed, watertight, put blanket on the ground then kitchen roll under tank edges, filled it up, left it for a cpl of hours no leaks at all!!! now just got to wait for my pump & filter to come off eBay & im sorted! :D :D

Good to hear that your tank didnt leak... Right now im just waiting to move into a house to reseal my tank, the apartment manager was allready pissed at me enough so i dont want to try and explain why i dumped some more water on the floor :p. So for right now the fish are split up into two 30G tanks, so they should be fine for the time being they are all just a couple of inches long, also i have a friend with a 75G that took the shovelnose for the time being because he was to big for the 30. When i get to resealing i will keep yall updated hopefully that will be in about a months time.
