I went to Petsmart today, to have my water tested ( i dont have a Nitrate test kit, so i got them to test and see what level my nitrates were at).
So, they tell me my ammonia is high. Which is IMPOSSIBLE, since i clean the tank every week, have plenty of bacteria in there, and i just checked with my Liquid test kit, which is 0. So, she takes me over to the med area, and shows me stress coat. She told me that the stress caot will add ammonia to my water, and keep my fish happy. Then, she tried to sell me some Bacteria in a bottle, to help with Nitrates ( which were, according to the strip, in the 10-20 range).

I think that was some of the worst advice i have heard from there yet. All i wanted was to know what my nitrates were at, an di returned 2 con's to get 2 new ones, as mine were constantly fighting, and that took forever because she couldnt find them on the wall of fish, even though i pointed them out 10 times! Grrr, honestly, i wish they would bother to EDUCATE their staff.

hey so you can return fish to petsmart????
please say yes!!

They do have a 14 day return policy. They were not going to let me return the 2 fish, butt hen they decided they would after i showed them their " 14 day, satisfaction garuntee". They melted like butter and took them and put them in a tub int he back room because they were worried that " the fighting might be a sign of illness".

Before I kept fish, I had a summer job at PetSmart in high school stocking shelves. Even though I rarely came into contact with customers (I started work an hour before closing) I still went through their training. They do water testing as a show - chances are they don't even use the right procedures, they always tell you something if not everything is high, and start selling you stuff to fix it. Basically, every question asked has to be a problem, and there has to be a product to miraculously fix it. I'm not sure which is worse, this, or all the other stores I've been to that will tell you water's fine when it's barely safe to touch, let alone put fish in.

Having watched them do water tests for people, I've noticed that one lady at my local PetSmart intentionally puts the wrong number of drops in to get a green color.

Yeah, when I had a little ammonia problem in my tank I went to petco to get my water tested. They tested it and the guys said, "Ok it looks all good, you could probably add up to 10 fish today", I knew that my ammonia most likely couldnt have gone all the way back to zero in 2 days so i asked, "What is the ammonia at?" and he said " Oh uhmm i dont know, we dont do ammonia testing." How pointless is that!!!! And isnt ammonia like the number one killer of fish in new aquariums? The must not test it on purpose then....
